Is this a public park? The Waimea Outdoor Circle operates the park and it is maintained by both dedicated and casual volunteers. It is free and open to the public. *Funhack: Every time you visit, pick up one piece of trash, no matter how small, and take it with you when you leave. Be a winner!
When is the park open? 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM Keep in mind that the gate is locked overnight.
What is there to do? Picnicking, strolling, exercising, relaxing, meditating, exploring native plants, and mannerly dog-walking (you know what that means!) Also, see the funhack suggested above. How about a tour or brochure? HERE! Is the park safe? It is not likely that you will experience difficulties if you visit during normal operating hours. It is not a good idea to put yourself at risk by being in any unlit secluded area after dark. A few things to watch out for: * Falling branches or trees, especially in adverse and high wind conditions. When they sway — STAY AWAY! * Sudden rise in stream flow. * Sharp objects on the ground, especially in the stream-bed (broken glass!) * Chickens can be lightning fast at snatching your snacks and have been known to grab things right out of our hands.
Can we bring and eat food in the park? Yes, just leave the park cleaner than you found it! Scroll to the top for a funhack.
Do we have to get a permit for a party? No - the pavilions, picnic tables, and other areas are available on a first-come-first-served basis.
Can we pitch a tent? You may set up a pop-up or shade tent. Set up on the perimeters to leave the open spaces for cavorting. Be conscious of other park users and keep the amplified music, etc., reasonable. Overnight camping is not allowed.
Is there a bathroom? There is a porta-potty. Please be conscious of the next user and keep it clean. Do not dispose of anything in the pit except toilet tissue. Take trash and spent feminine hygiene products with you for disposal after you leave the park.
Do you sell plants? A limited inventory of plants are available for purchase. Volunteers are usually on hand on Saturday mornings to assist.
Are all of the plants in the park native to Hawaiʻi? No. While the park has a variety of native endemic, indigenous, and canoe specimens, there are other plants that have yet to be cleared or have invaded, requiring ongoing volunteer efforts to maintain control.
Do you accept donations? Yes. There is a slot in the door of the middle container on the property. You may also send tax-deductible checks to: Waimea Outdoor Circle PO Box 6144 Kamuela, HI 95643
Can we feed the animals? Please do not feed the animals. The chickens create problems, and can become pesky if you are eating.
Can we let the kids chase the chickens? Yes, and if they catch one, feel free to take it home with you. They make great pets, and are always grateful for the scratch!
Why don’t you have trash cans? The park is made by maintained by volunteers. Join the effort and take your own trash, along with any you might find, out of the park for disposal. We are grateful for your kokua.
Is it OK to film or do photoshoots in the park? Respect for other park visitors is our priority. Please call 808-443-4482 to discuss your project.
How about commercial sales and services? We seek to maintain the park as a space for contemplative escape. Commercial sales and services are prohibited.
Can we pick the flowers? Please do not pick any flowers, leaves, or branches from the ʻōhiʻa trees because they are extremely vulnerable to ROD — Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death. Only pick other flowers and leaves respectfully and for your own personal use.
We want to volunteer! Show up on any Saturday from 9-11 AM and approach any volunteer. You will be graciously welcomed and gloved up! More information HERE.
