The Waimea Nature Park - Ulu La‘au

November 2003

NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) got together to help the 8th grade students at Waimea Intermediate School with mapping out a community project in Waimea. The Waimea Nature Park (Ulu La‘au) community project was in dire need of help with mapping out some of its points of interest and irrigation layout. Ms. Kathi Foster who teaches at Waimea Intermediate School Computer lab needed help with someone to teach her students as well as herself in the use of the computer software program ArcView. Reese Libby who is the Cartographer/Geographer for NRCS in Waimea and Steve Skipper the District Conservationist in the Mauna Kea District volunteered its help in teaching the students about GIS and the ArcView system. After two introduction one hour classes, the students went out to the park and GPS (Global Position Systems) points of interest at the park. The students created the maps and are now prepared the do more help at the park. Attached are photos and maps that the students made of the park. All in all it was a good education for everyone involved.
